EmprendeXXI Awards – 19th Edition
An initiative that recognises and supports technology- or digitally-based startups in Spain, driving their innovation and growth through monetary prizes, international training, and connections with the innovative entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The EmprendeXXI Awards are an initiative launched by CaixaBank, through DayOne, in collaboration with ENISA, aiming to recognise and support the most innovative startups with the greatest growth potential in Spain and Portugal. These awards are aimed at entrepreneurs leading technology- or digitally-based companies who wish to take this opportunity to stand out and compete for one of the prizes.
For this edition, companies established from 1 January 2022 onwards, with tax residence in Spain or Portugal, and meeting the established requirements, may participate.
The categories for this edition are:
- Territorial Awards or Regional Prize: aimed at the best company in each autonomous community (or Portugal), regardless of sector. All applications automatically enter this category upon submission.
- Special Mentions: two national-level recognitions — one for the company’s social impact (“Social Impact”) and the other for the most disruptive innovation (“Disruptive Innovation”) — open to all entries, irrespective of territory.
- Tomorrow’s Challenges: aimed at startups offering innovative solutions in three major areas: Business Transformation, Human & Wellbeing, Living Planet. (A total of 8 challenges in this edition).
In addition to the financial endowment, winning companies will access various benefits:
- An international training programme in world-renowned innovation hubs.
- Participation in the EmprendeXXI Investors Day, a key event to connect with investors and corporations.
- Access to the Alumni XXI community (DayOne AlumniXXI), which brings together founders from over 560 awarded companies since the competition began.
- Collaboration with CaixaBank on open innovation challenges.
Since its inception, the EmprendeXXI Awards have distributed nearly €10 million in prizes and actions, benefiting more than 560 companies. This nineteenth edition strengthens its commitment to innovation and growth, offering more categories, more recognition, and more opportunities for startups looking to make the leap.
Requirements
To submit an application for the EmprendeXXI Awards, candidate companies must meet the following requirements:
- Be companies incorporated as legal entities with profit motives (S.A., S.L., labour companies, cooperatives, civil companies) and have tax residence in Spain or Portugal.
- Have commenced activity or been incorporated from 1 January 2022 (Deed of incorporation or registration with the tax model 036).
- Not be self-employed.
- Not be considered “large enterprises” as defined by the European Commission, meaning companies with more than 250 employees and turnover exceeding €50 million annually, or with an annual balance sheet exceeding €43 million; or where more than 25% of the capital is held by one or more companies considered large by the above definition.
- Companies previously awarded the same prize in earlier editions may not apply for that same award again but may enter and compete in other categories.
- Founding partners must lead the company, hold a majority shareholding, and dedicate most of their working time to it. (A founding partners’ share above 50% does not apply to technology transfer initiatives derived from universities and research centres, provided that the entrepreneurial team comprises technical and business profiles).
- The Regional Prize is aimed at technology- and innovation-based companies across all territories and sectors.
- The Tomorrow’s Challenges Awards are aimed at companies presenting the best solutions within the challenges posed in this edition: Business Transformation, Human Wellbeing, and Living Planet.
