Spain leads innovation with one of the first AI factories in the EU

In an increasingly digital world oriented towards artificial intelligence (AI), Spain has reached an important milestone by being chosen to host one of the seven AI factories of the European Union. This achievement not only boosts the Spanish economy but also reinforces its leadership in innovation and technology in Europe.

España lidera la innovación con una de las primeras fábricas de IA en la UE

Spain positions itself as a leader in technological innovation by hosting one of the first seven Artificial Intelligence (AI) factories in the European Union. This ambitious project, announced by the European Commission, aims to democratize access to advanced supercomputing infrastructure, allowing companies, SMEs, and startups to have resources previously reserved for the research community. Are you interested in learning more about this project? Continue reading to discover how this AI factory will transform the technological and business landscape in Spain and Europe.

The AI factory will be installed at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center - National Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS), a center of excellence that will become the epicenter for the development and training of advanced AI models. This cutting-edge infrastructure will allow companies, SMEs, and startups to access supercomputing resources, previously limited to the research community, strengthening the innovative ecosystem and fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors.

The Government of Spain will invest 61.76 million euros in the creation of this AI factory. Additionally, the Generalitat of Catalonia will contribute 14 million euros, and countries such as Portugal, Turkey, and Romania will contribute up to a total of 98.86 million euros. The EUROHPC JU, the institution that channels the AI Factories initiative, will contribute another 98.33 million euros.

Services and benefits for companies

The factory will offer a series of services designed to promote the innovative ecosystem around AI:

  • Access to supercomputing resources: companies and startups will be able to use optimized supercomputing resources for AI, facilitating the development and training of advanced models.
  • Data space for training: a dedicated space will be available for the storage and processing of large volumes of data necessary to train AI models.
  • Training programs and startup accelerators: training programs and accelerators for startups will be implemented, promoting the training and growth of new technology companies.
  • Sectoral nodes: sectoral nodes will be created to promote the deployment of AI in key sectors such as health, regulation, finance, and the public sector.
Upgrade of the MareNostrum 5 Supercomputer

Of the seven artificial intelligence factories to be developed in the European Union, five hosting locations (Finland, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and Sweden) will implement world-class supercomputers specifically optimized for AI. In the case of Spain, the AI factory will leverage existing infrastructure through a significant upgrade of the current EuroHPC MareNostrum 5 system, located at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS).

This upgrade includes the incorporation of a new cluster specialized in the training of advanced AI models. This advancement will not only improve the processing capacity of the MareNostrum 5 but also position it as a key pillar for research and innovation in artificial intelligence within Europe.

Cutting-edge infrastructure

The artificial intelligence factories in Spain and Finland will include an experimental platform designed to provide cutting-edge infrastructure that allows the development and testing of innovative AI models and applications. This advanced environment will offer tools for researchers, startups, and companies to create, evaluate, and refine their solutions, thus fostering collaboration between European countries. According to the European Commission, these platforms will become key spaces for technological experimentation, promoting integration and innovation throughout Europe. Additionally, by facilitating access to advanced resources, these initiatives will strengthen synergies between countries, accelerate the development of AI-based solutions, and position Europe as a leader in the field of artificial intelligence worldwide.

Impact on innovation and competitiveness

The inauguration of the AI factory in Barcelona marks a milestone in Spain's technological advancement and its role as a European reference in the development of advanced technologies. This initiative, aligned with the European Union's strategy, reinforces strategic sovereignty in a key sector such as artificial intelligence, while democratizing access to supercomputing resources and fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors. This project not only boosts the competitiveness of companies and startups but also positions Europe as a global leader in AI, ensuring control over data and security in the development of innovative solutions.
